Until relocating to California in June 2017, Van Der Velde served as the 2017 President-elect of the Association of Florida Colleges. He previously served for five years on the AFC Board of Directors as Vice President for Commissions, Parliamentarian, and as Chair of the Instiutional Effectiveness, Planning & Professional Development (IEPPD) Commission. |

Van Der Velde is the 1979 Harry S Truman Scholar from Ohio, and is an active member of the Truman Scholars Association, and served a term on the Board of Directors from 2005-2008. |

Voters Choice Napa
Van Der Velde is the co-chair of Voters Choice Napa, which work to ensure underrepresented voters (youth/young adults, language minorities, people with disabilities and seniors) participate in elections in Napa County. VCN develops successful strategies for engaging voters, including outreach, education, voter registration, and get-out-the-vote – all while engaging in advocacy efforts to ensure that public officials consider the special needs of vulnerable populations.
